Arts And Crafts - Star Wars Crafts

Little kids love Star Wars. Whether it's the larger than life characters or the grand adventures, children (and let's face it, many adults) love that world. So here are some fun arts and crafts that will bring the fun times from the screen to your home.

Clay Ewok

Materials

polymer clay (i.e. Sculpey, Fimo, etc.) black, brown, orange, tan
one toothpick
craft knife (optional)

Directions

1. Take out the clay and mold the orange pieces into the shape of the headdress (essentially a rounded triangle with the middle cut out).

2. Round the brown pieces arms, body, and feet and attach them together. In the standing position, squish the body down gently so the feet flatten a bit and your Ewok will be able to stand.  An adult may use a craft knife to cut a small portion of the bottom off at a 90 degree angle to make your Ewok stand flat perfectly stable.

3. Place the flattened headdress with the hole over the face and softly work it down to wrap around the Ewok's head.  There should be a little room between the tan face and the hole in the headdress.  If there isn't, recut the headdress hole a tad bigger.  Place the smaller, tan inner ear shape on the outer ear and press to make each ear two-toned. Press the ears in place on top of the headdress.

4. Place the toothpick through the uplifted hand of the Ewok (this can help steady the character) and add a bit of pointy clay to the top as a spearhead if desired.

Princess Leia Headband

Materials

Brown headband

Brown yarn
Brown felt
Low-temperature glue gun

Directions

1. Cut two circles of felt.

2. Cut 20 pieces of yarn, each 3 feet in length. Divide in half and tie each bundle with a small piece of yarn. Braid both bundles, tying the ends with a second small piece of yarn.

3. Glue the end of one braid to the center of a felt circle using the low-temperature glue gun.

4. Slowly wrap the braid, gluing the inside edge of the braid as you wrap.

5. When you reach the end of the braid, tuck in the loose end and glue to secure.

6.  Repeat the process with the second braid and felt circle.

7.  Cut two small strips of felt.

8. Attach each bun to the end of the headband by adding a dab of glue to the felt strips and then attaching these to the felt circles. Do not glue the entire bun to the headband, as you'll want the ends of the headband to go behind the ears, while the buns fall over them.

Chewbacca Sock Puppet

Materials

Fake brown craft fur
Brown sock
Scissors
Needle and brown thread
Black button
Chenille stems/pipe cleaners
Googly eyes
Brown and grey felt
Fabric glue

Directions

1. Take an old sock and fold the fake fur over the heel and toe of the sock so that the edges of the fur align with the edges of the top of the sock.

2. Sew into place, but don't sew the sock closed. Put your hand inside the sock so that your fingers are in the toe area and your thumb is in the heel -- making this the mouth area. Glue the eyes in place. Sew the button nose down, but be careful not to sew the sock shut -- you should still be able to place your fingers inside.

3. To make the arms, cut two strips of fake fur. Roll each strip around a few chenille stems, and sew the edges and ends together. Sew the arms to the sides of the puppet.

4. Last, cut out a long rectangle strip of brown felt, and sew the ends together to make Chewie's bandolier. Cut out seven small rectangles of gray felt and glue to the bandolier. Cut a thin strip of brown felt and glue it to the middle of the bandolier. Place over Chewie's head so it sits on his body like a sash.

Have fun in a galaxy far, far away!
